Flamenco dancing is one of the more popular art forms of today, thanks to the impressive vitality and expression everything is carried out with. “Derroche Flamenco”, the dancing company of dancer Chelo Ruiz may here be a fine example. Their Bulerias are unmistakably festive and burlesque. On the other hand, they also convincingly succeed in translating the hard miner’s life in Almeria into their Tarantas.
Derroche Flamenco originates from Almeria, a region with its own specific styles which has always occupied a special place in the world of flamenco. Guitar-players Tomatito and Niño Josele are the flamenco-icons on the eastern side of Andalucia, but in their wake a whole new talented generation of guitar-players, singers and dancers has emerged.
Dancer Consuelo Ruiz Ponce (CHELO RUIZ) is one of the exponents of this new generation. She comes from a flamenco environment and put her first dancing steps at the age of five. She apprenticed herself to such grand names as there are Matilde Coral, Manolo Marin, Javier La Torre, Pilar Mengibar and Tatiana Garrido. But her major source of inspiration is undoubtedly Mariquilla. After her stay with Mariquilla as a student, she soon became part of her company. When she was eighteen, she already opened her own dancing academy in Almeria and the formation Derroche Flamenco can be seen as the next step in a promising solo carreer.
Derroche Flamenco further consists of:
- Sonia Miranda: Vocals: promising young singer who left her flamenco-environment in Almeria to go study in Sevilla, a.o. at the Fundación Cristina Heeren.
- Niño de la Manola: Guitar: talented guitar-player who accompanies both singing and dancing in a highly professional way. Litteraly comes from the street where Tomatito lives and worked together with that other guitar wonder from Almeria: Niño Josele. He accompanied a.o. Jose Sorroche, Rocio Segura, Potito and Rancapino. A very versatile and trustworthy artist.
- Salvador Martos: Percussion: versatile artist and from the same generation as Niño de la Manola |
